“Revolution is not possible among exhausted, depressive, and isolated individuals.” – Byung-Chul Han⁣⁣

MAY 30, 2020: America is reopening. Which feels like a hope of rupture and change. And yet in our recent past and near future, we can already see and feel America on loop, the repetition of histories. We’re tired, we’re not okay. But that doesn’t lessen our need of new methods, infrastructures, and institutions.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In making new systems, we must instill radical practices of care alongside. This is a state of emergency, but continuously emergent. This state is one of an extended crisis. This has, is, and will be a durational process, this will take time and will never be finished. How can we care for those doing the work and for each other, to create and give energy so we can keep going, keep organizing in public and in private?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As places of communing, what is the role of arts institutions in supporting radical change and being places of care? Annas doesn’t know the answer, and there are infinitely more questions and complications. But as an institution, albeit of two people, we not only speak on wanting change but want to be about it. To build, test, collapse and rebuild (infra)structures in the arts that do the work we need, and organize, horizontally align ourselves and share resources with those that are also invested. We hope...No, we demand to see other art institutions, small and large, the institutions with keywords of diversity, inclusion and equity in their mission, be about it as well.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and countless others, we hold and lift you as we continue to work, take care of, and challenge each other.⁣⁣
